CHEM SAFETY Flashcards
Hierarchy of Controls from most effective to least effective
Elimination > Substitution > Engineering Controls > Administrative Controls > PPE
This is the most effective method of control because it removes the hazard completely.
Elimination
The process of replacing a hazardous substance with a less hazardous one. In this
example, the less toxic chemical is being used in place of the more toxic chemical.
Substitution
These are physical changes to the workplace that reduce or eliminate the hazard.
Engineering Controls
These are policies and procedures that are put in place to reduce the risk of exposure to a hazard
Administrative Controls
This is the least effective method of control because it does not eliminate the hazard.
PPE
Used to protect workers from hazards
that cannot be eliminated or controlled by other methods.
