Chem - Reactivity - Rate of reaction Flashcards

1
Q

What is activation energy in terms of catalysts

A

A catalyst provides an alternative reaction pathway for the reaction with a lower activation energy

Q

What needs to occur in order for a colistions to be effective

A

For a collision between two reactant particles to be effective particles must have energy grater then the activation energy

Q

What is the collision theory

A

In order for a chemical reaction to occur two or more reactant particles must collide with sufficient force and at the correct ortination. The minimum amount of energy required for a chemical reaction to proceed is called activation energy

Q

How does temp affect rate of reaction

A

If kinetic energy is increased there will be more energetic collisions between particles, and it is only the collitons above the activation energy that may lead to the formation of products. By increasing the number of collisions above the activation energy in a given amount of time the faster the rate of reaction becomes. Increasing temp will also mean particles are moving faster therefore will collide more often increase rate of reaction.

Q

How dose surface area increase the rate of reaction

A

By exposing more particles therefore more particles are able to collide

Q

How dose increasing the concentration increase the rate of reaction

A

Means that there are more particles that occupy the same amount of space therefore the particles are much closer together. In chemical reactions if the particles are close they will collide more often
