Chem - reactivity - Equilibrium Flashcards
What is the equilibrium law
Any change made to the system in equilibrium results in a shift of the equilibrium in the direction that minimises the change
What is kc
Kc is known as the equilibrium constant it is only affected by temperature
How is the size of Kc affected
If Kc is large grater then 10 to the power of 3 the concentration of the product is high compared to the reatents. If Kc is very small less then 10 to the power -3 then the reactants are higher compared to the products
What are the factors affecting equilibrium potions in terms of concentration
- Increase in either reactant = Equilibrium moves to the right
- Decrease in either reactant = Equilibrium moves to the left
- Increase in either product = Equilibrium to move to the left
- Decrease in either product = Equilibrium to move to the right
What are the factors affecting Equilibrium potion in terms of pressure
- Increase in pressure favors a move to the side with fewer moles
- Decrease in pressure favors the move to the side with more moles
Factors affecting Equilibrium in terms of Temp
- An increase in temp favors the endothermic reaction
- A decrease in temp favors the exothermic reaction
Reminder - a +change in energy means that the forward reaction is endo and reverse is exo
A - change in energy means that the forward reaction is exo and the reverse is endo
How do catalyst affect the equilibrium position
Catalysts do not affect the potion but the rate at which equilibrium is reached
