Chem - reactivity - Equilibrium Flashcards

1
Q

What is the equilibrium law

A

Any change made to the system in equilibrium results in a shift of the equilibrium in the direction that minimises the change

Q

How is the size of Kc affected

A

If Kc is large grater then 10 to the power of 3 the concentration of the product is high compared to the reatents. If Kc is very small less then 10 to the power -3 then the reactants are higher compared to the products

Q

What are the factors affecting equilibrium potions in terms of concentration

A
  • Increase in either reactant = Equilibrium moves to the right
  • Decrease in either reactant = Equilibrium moves to the left
  • Increase in either product = Equilibrium to move to the left
  • Decrease in either product = Equilibrium to move to the right

Q

What are the factors affecting Equilibrium potion in terms of pressure

A
  • Increase in pressure favors a move to the side with fewer moles
  • Decrease in pressure favors the move to the side with more moles

Q

Factors affecting Equilibrium in terms of Temp

A
  • An increase in temp favors the endothermic reaction
  • A decrease in temp favors the exothermic reaction
Reminder - a +change in energy means that the forward reaction is endo and reverse is exo
A - change in energy means that the forward reaction is exo and the reverse is endo

Q

How do catalyst affect the equilibrium position

A

Catalysts do not affect the potion but the rate at which equilibrium is reached
