Chem Chapter 4 - Chemical Bonding Flashcards
What are noble gases?
Last element in each period of the periodic table, full valence electron shells or noble gas electronic configuration. Chemically unreactive and monoatomic
Now are cations formed?
Formed when an atom loses one or more electrons and are positively charged. There are more protons than electrons in cations
How are anions formed?
Formed when an atom gains one or more electrons. Negatively charged and have more electrons than protons
The ionic bond is made up of?
Metal and non-metal
What is ionic bond?
Mutual electrostatic attraction between ions of opposite charges
What are ionic compounds?
Neutral substance made up of tons of opposite charges held together by electrostatic forces of attraction between positive and negative ions
Name and describe an ionic structure
Giant ionic crystal lattice. Ions of opposite charges are held held in a regular and repeating pattern. The line between the charges indicates the closest attraction between positive and negative ions
What is valency?
Refers to the number of electrons that must be lost, gained or shared in order for the atom to attain a noble gas electronic configuration
