Q

What is the 4 steps for electrolysis?

A
  1. Pour enough copper chloride into a beaker so that it is around 3/4 full.
  2. Insert two carbon graphite electrodes into the beaker and make sure they do not touch.
  3. Attach crocodile leads to the rods and connect to a 4volt power supply and switch on.
  4. At cathode - copper should be seen discharging and at the anode bubble gas should be seen and chlorine smelt in the air

Q

How do you électrolyse sodium chloride?

A

Repeat the same beginning steps for electrolysis but with sodium chloride solution.
At anode chlorine is discharged and at cathode hydrogen is produced as sodium is higher than hydrogen.

Q

What are the rules for the electrodes discharging metals / non metals in electrolysis?

A

At cathode - hydrogen is produce if the metal is more reactive than hydrogen but if the metal is less reactive than that metal is produced.
At anode - halide ions will form their gas so (F-, Cl-, Br- etc.) but OH- ions will form oxygen gas.
