Windshear definition
airspeed changes greater than 15 knots, vertical speed changes greater than 500 fpm.
Detect windshear
Hesitant/excessive airspeed buildup on takeoff or +-10 KCAS on approach.
Uncommanded FPV change of 2 degs or VVI 500 fpm.
Excessive radar altitude sink rate.
Excessive nose high/nose low pitch attitude
Windshear Caution v. Warning
Caution: “WINDSHEAR” at bottom of PFD for performance increasing windshear
Warning: “WINDSHEAR” in center of PFD + CAWS alert for performance decreasing windshear
Takeoff Windshear Recovery
Prior to Go:
Reject takeoff
After Go:
MAX thrust
Delay rotation, no later than 1,000 ft remaining
Pitch for 1-2 degrees FPV, to no more than 15 degree pitch attitude. Below 200 feet can increase to stick shaker/CAWS alert
Do not follow F/D guidance
Raise the gear after an extended period of positive climb rate has been established and ground contact is not a concern, no less than 1,000 AGL.
Maintain 1/2 flaps, index unchanged, until windshear is exited and VMFR is attained
Approach Windshear Recovery
MAX Thrust
TOGA and disengage AP/ATS, disregard F/D.
