Checkpoint 3 Flashcards

Classes 1 to 5 - Module 2

1
Q

What is a briefing?

A

A briefing is a preflight conversation about the most important aspects of the flight.

During the briefing we talk about:

  • Our destination and alternative airports;
  • The airport and runway conditions;
  • The flight duration;
  • Current weather;
  • Cockpit code;
  • Possible emergencies and procedures;
    Or any relevant information

Q

What is an effective briefing?

A

For me, an effective briefing is very informative;

It’s when the crew feels ready and well-informed about the flight.

  • We share important and relevant information
  • Everyone feels involved in the operation.

The captain normally shares information about:

  • Weather conditions
  • Flight duration; and
  • Alternative airport

Q

What are your responsibilities during taxi?

A

Today, I am flying a ________.
So, during taxi I need to:

  • Study the airport layout;
  • Maintain constant communication;
  • Follow the instructions;
  • And Report my Position;
  • I also Control the airplane;
  • Moreover, I Keep a good speed and separation from other aircraft
  • Finally, I Proceed to the Holding point or parking position

Q

What kind of problems can pilots face during taxi?

A

During taxi we can have many problems, like:

  • A tire blowout;
  • A brake failure;
  • An engine malfunction;
  • A ground collision;
  • Or even, cause
  • A runway incursion.

Those are some examples

Q

What is the most dangerous phase of the flight?

A

I believe that the most dangerous phase of the flight is the takeoff.

Because in this stage the airplane is:

  • Very heavy;
  • Slow; and
  • Close to the ground;
  • Also, we don’t have any extra power left;
  • So, if a problem happens, pilots don’t have many options and must climb.

Try answering with TAXI and LANDING, too.

Q

What kind of problems can we have during takeoff?

A

During takeoff pilots can suffer:

  • A tire blowout;
  • An engine failure;
  • A windshear warning;
  • A bird ingestion;
  • A Master warning;
    Or even a runway excursion.

Q

What is the procedure to reject a takeoff?

A

To reject a takeoff, I have to:

  • Reduce power to idle;
  • Apply the necessary brakes; or
  • Wait for the autobrake to kick in;
  • Then,I control the airplane over the runway;
  • And, after a complete stop;
  • Finally I inform ATC about the problem and my intentions.

Q

What is V1?

A
  • V1 is the decision speed.
  • It is the maximum speed to reject a takeoff.
  • Below V1, pilots can reject the takeoff safely. However,
  • After V1, we must continue.

Q

What is the importance of V1 and V2?

A

V1 and V2 are very important takeoff reference speeds.

  • V1 is the maximum speed to reject a takeoff and we can only reject a takeoff below V1.

On the other hand,

  • V2 is the takeoff safety speed in case of an engine failure.
    V2 will provide a good climb rate and a safe margin from the stall speed.
    It also helps pilots to clear obstacles during the climb.

Q

What is liftoff?

A

Liftoff is the moment the airplane becomes airborne.

  • It happens after the rotation speed
    and it’s basically when the
  • landing gear leaves the ground and the flight starts.

Q

How do pilots know when it’s time for liftoff?

A

We don’t really know the time for liftoff.
During the Takeoff Roll, we focus on the Rotation speed.

  • When we reach VR, we start to increase the pitch of the aircraft
  • and just wait for the liftoff to happen

Q

How do pilots determine V1, V2 and the rotation moment?

A

These speeds are calculated before the flight
and we normally consider many variables, such as the

  • runway’s length and conditions;
  • outside air temperature;
  • air density;
  • and also our aircraft’s weight and configuration.

Q

Describe this Picture

A

In this picture, I can see a narrow body jet that’s parked in a remote stand with the help of chocks.

In the center, there are some passengers boarding the aircraft using an airstair and holding their carry-on.

This is a low-wing, narrow body airplane operated by Ryan Air. There are some workers loading the aircraft, too.

In the background, I see an ambulift on the right-hand side of the aircraft and an ambulance on its left side.

I can also see taxiways and runway position markers. At last, there are lots of trees and some houses close to the airport.

This picture was taken during the day.
