Check 24 & 25 Flashcards
What is trauma?
Physical injury caused when an external force is applied to the body
What is kinetics?
Branch of physics dealing with objects in motion and exchange of energy that occurs as objects collide
What is Newton’s First Law of Inertia?
A body in motion will remain in motion, unless acted upon by an outside force. A body at rest will remain at rest unless acted upon by an outside force
What is the kinetic energy formula?
What makes the biggest difference in that formula?
KE=1/2mv2
Velocity
Know the difference between blunt and penetrating trauma?
Blunt trauma is a result of force to the body that causes injury without penetrating the soft tissues.
Penetrating trauma causes injury by objects that pierce and penetrate the surface of the body
What are the different phases of a vehicle accident?
Vehicle collision phase 1
Declaration of the vehicle
body collision phase 2
Declaration of the occupation
Organ collision phase 3
Declaration of the internal organs
secondary collision phase 4
Other objects in the car hit the patient
additional impacts, phase 5
Additional impact received by the vehicle
Be able to identify the different injuries with the different types of vehicle impacts
Frontal
Airbags and seatbelts, punctured lung, chest, and abd wall injury.
Lateral
A head injury and death
Rear end
Cervical and spine injuries
Rollover
Multiple of injuries
Rotational
Head injuries
What is the difference between adult and pediatrics in regard to being struck by a vehicle?
Adults is thrown in the air or under the vehicle depending on speed of vehicle
Pediatrics usually turn towards the vehicle horn
What is Waddell’s Triad?
Pattern of injuries seen in pedestrian children who are stuck by a motor vehicle
Femur/pelvis, chest/abdomen area, and head
What factors should you take into account in regard to Falls?
The height of the fall
The type of surface struck
The part of the body that hit first, followed by the path of energy displacement
What is the difference between penetrating in perforating trauma?
Penetrating Tramua
injury or injuries that occur when object pierces the skin and enters the body
Perforating Trauma
Form of penetrating trauma: occurs when an object enters and exits the body
What are the three different levels of penetrating trauma?
Low velocity
Knives, swords, ice picks, etc.
Medium velocity
Handgun bullets
High Velocity
Rifle bullets
What is the difference between the permanent and temporary cavity with penetrating trauma?
What is cavitation?
Be able to identify the different injuries in regard to blasts
Primary, Secondary, tertiary, and quaternary
What organs are most affected by the blast wave?
