Chatper 1 - Describing Biodiversity Flashcards
What is biotic factors?
Living components of en ecosystem
What is abiotic factors?
Non-living components of an ecosystem. E.g. landscape, minerals etc
What is a quadrat?
A 1m x 1m sampling method. Everything inside the quadrat is surveyed.
What is species richness?
Number of species present in an ecosystem,
What is relative species abundance?
Refers to how many species are present
What is percentage cover?
Estimate of how much that species in inhabiting in the quadrat
What is Simpsons diversity index?
A numerical value of how diverse an area is
What is spacial scale?
How much a studied ecosystem covers
What is Macro, meso, and micro level ecosystems?
Macro: large area of land or water (oceans, continent). miso:Medium sized area (lake or dessert). Micro: Small area of land (biome, rainforest)
What is temporal scale?
The time period over which an ecosystem is studied
How does a species activityy effect surveying?
Different species active in different times of the day. Hibernation,
What is environmental limiting factors in regards to species?
aspects of the environment which limit a species ability to inhabit the area
What are some environmental limiting factors?
Rainfall, soil types, temperature etc
What is biodiversity include?
Diversity of species and ecosystems
