What was James’ legacy?
- England had financed Mansfeld’s expeditions and were subsidizing Denmark’s armies. 2. Arminians were being promoted in court. 3. James had fallen out with parliament, but they had managed to work together.
What was Charles like?
Aloof, rigid and deeply religious. He liked strict rules and was very shy owing to his stammer. He had a strong belief in divine right and was deeply committed to his family.
How much money would parliament give Charles?
Two subsidies of £140,000, no war had been declared and they were unclear what the money would be used for.

Soldiers came across a farm with vats of wine and got drunk, illness swept through the crew and they returned home having achieved nothing.

In 1625 Richelieu had used a force on loan from the english to defeat a Huguenot force, he had also outmaneuvered him with marriage negotiations.

1627, plagued by inadequate supplies and reinforcements, upon reaching the stronghold they realized that their ladders were too short and had to return to England.
What effect did foreign policy have on Charles’ relations with parliament?
Poisoned relations with his first three parliaments, they were unwilling to vote money only to see it wasted, this in turn made defeat more likely.

Force was sent to relieve it in 1628, it was a greater failure then the first and fueled a parliamentary crisis which led to the petition of right.
What happened to Buckingham?
1628, he was assassinated by john Felton. His funeral was held with only 100 mourners and he had been buried the previous day in case crowds tried to attack the body.
How did Buckingham’s death effect Charles’ relationship with parliament?
Made it worse, parliament realized it was Charles who was behind unpopular policies. Charles resented the fact that they’d celebrated his friend’s death.

Great failure, La Rochelle fell to the french in October.

1630 under the treaty of Madrid, a rehash of the treaty of London.
How can both sides be blamed for foreign policy failures?
Commons- failed to provide finance, so missions were doomed to fail. Charles- too much trust in Buckingham, wars were poorly planned and executed and never stood a chance.
