Practitioner should draw information from client using
- verbal information (conversations)
- behavioural information (observations)
Formulation is fluid, changing with progression of sessions
Collaborative Relationship
Formulation process open to clients input
Practitioner should involve client in therapy through development of understanding of concepts. E.g. Automatic thought
Structure to sessions/therapy
- Check clients mood
- Brief review of week
- Set agenda for current session
- Feedback & link to previous session
- Review homework
- Discuss agenda items
- Set homework
- Seek feedback at end of session
Goal-directed therapy
Develop goals in sessions which can be worked towards inside and outside of sessions
Goals should be
- person-centred
- manageable
- achievable
- measurable
Examines and questions unhelpful thinking
Uses Socratic questioning approach to encourage client to unpick evidence for core beliefs and automatic thoughts
Use range of aids and techniques
Integral to framework of CBT
Should aim to aid the client in overcoming unhelpful thihking
Teaches client to become own therapist
Help them develop problem-solving skills which they can implement outside of therapy
Homework setting
Another form of encouragement of active participation
- aids maintenance of continuity between therapist and clients and sessions
