Characteristics and Themes of Life Flashcards
What are the three domains of life?
Bacteria. Archaea and Eukarya
The characteristic that describes a living thing’s ability to adjust it’s internal environment within limits.
Regulation
The characteristic that describes a living thing’s ability to increase in size and take on specialized structures.
Growth and development
Which characteristic of living things does not apply to an individual organism?
Evolution
What is involved in the characteristic of energy processing?
Taking in and using energy and using it for life processes.
What is natural selection?
A mechanism of evolution in which the environment(nature) determine which individual will survive and reproduce.
What is the hereditary molecule of living things.
DNA
What is a gene?
A hereditary unit of information found on DNA.
How does energy move through the ecosystem?
Energy the system and moves through in one direction.
How do nutrients move through the ecosystem?
Nutrients are reused and circulated or cycle through the ecosystem.
What is the smallest unit that can be alive?
A cell
What is made when similar cells work together?
A tissue
What is an organ?
A group of tissues working together for a specific function.
What is a species?
A group of organisms that will reproduce in natural conditions to produce fertile offspring.
What is a population?
A group of one species living in a specific location.
