Characterisitcs of living organisms Flashcards
What are the 8 basic characteristics of all living organisms?
- Movement
- Respiration
- Sensitivity
- Control
- Growth
- Reproduce
- Excretion
- Nutrition
Why do organisms need to move?
They need to move towards things like water and food and away from things like predators and poisons.
Why do organisms need to respire?
So they can release energy from their food by a process called respiration.
Why do organisms need to have sensitivity?
So they can respond to their surroundings. Living organisms can react to changes in their surroundings in a number of ways.
Why do organisms need control?
So they can control their internal conditions such as temperature and water content.
Why do organisms need to grow?
So they can grow and develop into an adult.
Why do organisms need to reproduce?
So they can produce offspring in order for their species to survive.
Why do organisms need to excrete?
They need to get rid of their waste products such as carbon dioxide and urine. This process is called excretion.
Why do organisms need nutrition?
To provide them with energy and the raw materials for growth and repair. Nutrients include things like fats, lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, minerals and vitamins.
