Shows how naive Shiela is and how she is still living in her parents shadow despite being an adult. It also shows how women at the time were not allowed to be independent and were expected to live under the control of a man.
“Was it an accident”
Shows her childish nature and how she had not yet matured as a person. It also emphasises how women at the time were not allowed or given the opportunity to be independent in life
“Oh I wish you hadn’t told me”
Shows how selfish she is and how little she cares about the hardship working class people face. It also shows how little sympathy she takes when others suffer
“These girls aren’t cheap labour they are people”
Shows how she has developed morally and is starting to care and take responsibility for Shiela it also shows that Priestly has hope in the future generations and thinks they will be better.
“I’m ashamed of it”
Shows her taking responsibility and has learnt an important moral lesson about how to treat others
“I suppose we are all nice people now”
Shows that she is disappointed and bitter at the fact that her parents feel no responsibility for what they have done
