Mr Birling - “lower cost and higher prices”
Shows how Sheila’s marriage is only for financial gain nad demonstratetes how upper class paid unreasonable wages for personal gain. This could also show that Priestley wanted to show capatialist in a negative way.
Mr Birling discription - “Hard headed man of buisness”
Stanley Baldwin was a prime minister between the 2 world wars and was decribesd as being hard faced as he profited of the war.
This is simular to Mry Birling as he alos benifits and profits off his suffering workers. This can show that priestley presents capatilist at the time as being selfish as they paid workers ureseonable wages
Mr Birling - “A man has to make his own way”
This can shows he believes that he only looks after himself nad this can present capatilistic views as being selfish. He continues on to talk about taking care of family and this can shows family is a secondary thought that comes after himself and his greed for money and power
Mr Birling - “unsinkable absolutely unskinkable”
Dramatic irony as in the end the Titanic does sink. The Titanic could represent wealth power and symbolise capatalism as a majority of the passerngers on the Titanic consisted of rich and powerful people.
This can foreshadow the downfall of capatilistic viewsby the inspector who represents socialism
Mrs Birling - “I did my duty”
shows that she has no sympathy for the girl and takes no responsibility for her involvment in Eva smith deah. It also shows how divided the different classes were. Shows that Preistley wants everyone to take care or eachother and shows that he upper class should take social responsibility.
Mrs Birling - “Go and look for the father of the child. It’s his responcibility”
While trying to defend herself she passes the blame onto the father . Ti can show the lack of responcibilty she takes and how little sympathy she takes for the working class. In doing this she inknowingly passes the blame to her som and this could show how she hasn’t raised her son properly
Mrs Biling - “I accept no blame for it all”
Gerald - “I don’t come into this suicide business”
Mrs Birling represennts the upper class. This denial of blame illustrates how the upper class often distances themselves from the suffering of the working class. This shows Preistleys emphasising the need for a benifit system.
Gerald - “They’d be all broke if I know them”
Shows how little he thinks of the working class and shows that he does not see them as individuals and sees them more as a group.
Gerald - “The girl gave me a glance”
Wants to appear as the saviour who saved Eva Smith in her time of need. Howerver in reality he is exploiting her vulnerability as a poor women to keep her as his mistress. This can show that Preistley is encouraging to use the power they have as when this is shown they have the vote to change society.
Gerald - “she knew it couldn’t last”
Shows how divided the social classes are and that the upper class is only concearned with their reputation. On a deeper level it could show the preasure of younger upper class citizens as they were excpected to marry for power and money and not for love. It could also show that Daisy knows that as a working class women she can’t experience true happiness
Gerald - “Everything is alright now”
Unlike Eric and Shiela, Gerald has not changed as a charecter has learn’t no moral lesson.
Gerald - “Young and fresh
Adjectives to describe Daisy. Shows how women were treated in a capitalistic, patriarchal society and shows that people at the time had no respect for women and didn’t view them as people. Despite this outrages statemnet both Shiela and Mrs Birling said nothing and Preistly is trying to encourage the audiance to speak out and enforce change.
Shiela - “O-sorry, I didn’t know “
Shiela - “Was it an accident”
Shows her childish nature and how she had not yet matured as a person. It can also shows that she lives under her parents shadow depite being an adult. Can show how women were not allowed to be independant had ot live under the control of a man. This could show how Priestley believes that women should try and break this societal norm
Shiela - “Oh i wish i hadn’t told me”
Shows how selfish she is and how little she cares about the hardship working class people face. It is also shows how little sympathy she takes whne others suffer
Shiela - “They aren’t cheap labour they are people”
Shows that the younger genoration is changing and the emphasis of people can reflect Preiestleys socialist views and believes it is important to take care of others
