Chapters 7 - 8 Flashcards
D.I. 7.3
Role of urinary, respiratory, and skeletal systems in maintaining body’s pH
Hydrogen ions must be excreted through the urine because they are acidic. The bone releases calcium carbonate into the bloodstream, neutralizing acid in the blood
D.I. 8.3
Name and describe three abnormal spinal curvatures
Scoliosis – curve to the side
Kyphosis – hunchback
Lordosis – swayback
D.I. 9.1
Explain what happens to articulate cartilage during exercise and why a warm-up period is important
Synovial fluid is warmed by exercise and becomes thinner and more easily absorbed by the articulate cartilage. The cartilage swells and provides better cushioning against wear and tear.
D.I. 9.3
Explain the problems that may occur with dislocation and why to be careful with patients who have a suspected dislocated shoulder
If a shoulder is dislocated it can get nerve damage, atrophy, or paralysis if it is untreated. Be gentle with unconscious people, not pulling on them.
D.I. 7.2
Achondroplastic Dwarfism
Cause?
Long bones stop growing in childhood.
Because of a failure of cartilage growth from deficiency of growth hormone
