What age range is associated with J20 acute bronchitis?
J20.- is used for patients under the age of 15
(patients above 15 years with bronchitis NOS should be coded to J40.-)
When can code J46.X Status asthmaticus be assigned?
Only when the responsible consultant has documented a diagnoses of:
* ‘Acute severe asthma’
or
* ‘Status asthmaticus’
How should postprocedural pneumonia be coded?
Must be coded with a body system code that classifies the type of pneumonia followed by a code from Y83-Y84 to show that it is a complication of the medical procedure.
Must not follow the index trail ‘Pneumonia - resulting from a procedure (J95.8)
When should respiratory failure (J96) be coded?
Must always be coded when recorded.
How should the 5th character subdivisions at J96 Respiratory failure be used?
The 5th character must always be assigned whether the type has been specified or not (9 - when not specified)
How should pneumonia be coded to show that it is hospital acquired (HAP)?
Must add Y95.X (Nosocomial condition)
How should asthma in a child be coded?
Should only be coded to J45.0 if specifically stated as ‘childhood asthma’ by the responsible consultant. Otherwise code to J45.9 (or specific type of asthma)
