Chapter VI - Diseases of the nervous system Flashcards
What are the 2 stages of onset of Alzheimer’s disease classified at G30.- ?
- Early onset - before 65, AKA Type 2
- Late onset - after 65, AKA Type 1
What is meant by the term ‘episodic’ at block G40-G47 Episodic and paroxysmal disorders?
Conditions that flare up periodically
Why must epilepsy always be recorded when documented in the medical record?
Epilepsy is included in Appendix 1: Co-morbidities list and is therefore always considered clinically relevant
When an epileptic patient is admitted for treatment of an injury sustained during an epileptic fit, how should this be coded?
- The injury must be coded as the primary diagnosis.
- The external cause must be coded next.
- Followed by the relevant epilepsy code.
How must loss of vision with Amaurosis fugax be coded?
An additional code classifying the loss of vision must not be assigned.
When can codes within categories G81-G83 (Hemiplegia, Paraplegia and tetraplegia and other paralytic syndromes) be assigned in the primary position?
Only when their cause is not recorded
If the cause is known, they are assigned in a secondary position.
Exception: when the cause is no longer present (sequela)
How must hemiplegia (G81) when due to a stroke that is currently being treated be coded?
Hemiplegia must be coded in a secondary position to the stroke.
When can the codes C90.0D Multiple myeloma and G63.1A Polyneuropathy in neoplastic disease be assigned to show POEMS syndrome?
These codes must only be assigned when all the features of this disease are present and have been confirmed by the responsible consultant.
The features of POEMS syndrome are:
* Polyneuropathy
* endocrinopathy
* monoclonal gammopathy
* skin changes
* myeloma
