Chapter Three Flashcards
weak electrolytes
A substance that ionizes or dissociates only partially in water to produce an aqueous solution in which both individual ions and intact molecules are present.
total ionic equation
A chemical equation in which all ions and molecules present in solution, including spectator ions, are shown.
strong electrolytes
A substance that ionizes or dissociates completely in water to produce an aqueous solution in which only the constituent ions and not intact molecules are present.
stoichiometry
The study of quantitative relationships between the amounts of reactants and products in a chemical reaction.
spectator ions
Ion that is present in a solution but does not actively participate in a chemical reaction.
salt
Ionic compound that can be formed by the reaction of an acid with a base.
Solubility
The ability of a compound to dissolve in solution.
soluble
Description of a solid that dissolves in solution to a reasonably large extent.
solute
minor component in a solution
solution
A homogeneous mixture of two or more substances in a single phase.
solvent
The component present in the greatest amount of any solution.
reactants
substance that is consumed during a reaction
products
Substance formed in a chemical reaction that appears on the right-hand side of a chemical equation.
