Why did the CCP win the civil war?

A

Mao claimed to understand the people struggle which was stark contrast to the out of touch GMD leaders, Mao attackers landlords and redistributed 60% of land boosting agricultural output significantly.
Guerilla warfare was very effective as it allowed small unannounced attack on GMD force that reduced morale and eventually took them out. Mao organised a Guerilla warfare force into a well distributed PLA .
Mao assumed direct control over the armed forces and overcame doubt of his marshals allowing him to intervene at any point. He did not heed Stalin’s advice to withdraw for fear of a us invasion, he held fast and reclaimed china.

A

He could happily cede area if it mean greater gain in the future something that Jiang could not do. They gave up their base at Yanan when overwhelmed by a greater force and Mao famously said “ We will give Jiang Yanan, and he will give us china”

A

Jiang sent his best troops to Manchuria while not having secured total control over central and northern china, Spreading his troops too thin.
His supply lines were too long and very weak to CCP attacks.
The leaders he appointed were weak and corrupt lacking the ability to plan ahead and to form supply chains. They often stole the money meant for the troops pay.

A

Lin Baio was a very capable leader who was a veteran of the long march and Japanese war, he had experience with guerrilla warfare and conventional warfare.

A

Mao expressed that his soldier always treat native populations with respect wherever they went. This helped inform the belief that the army and the people where one. And garnered the ccp more respect and a better reputation among the people.

Political indoctrination was part of PLA training making troops more likely to endure hardships for a cause they believed in.

A

Effective in Manchuria as it had hilly terrain and large forests. used to wear down the GMD unit bu unit reducing their numerical advantage and wearing down morale.
CCP tactically dominated rural area and sized vital communication lines whereas the GMD stayed in their cities

How did Jiang himself contribute to the GMD loss?

A

Jiang was a poor military leader unable to delegate power to his subordinates.
He attempted to control what his commanders did on the battle field when he wasn’t present. He wearied his close supporters with promotion and was suspicious of more independent minded commanders.

A

The army was mainly conscripts who were left many days without food and water. The forces lacked fighting spirit and deaths from hunger and cold where common, there were high numbers of desertion and in some cases troop had to be tied together to prevent this. Nationalsit troops had a reputation for violence and brutality against civilians.

A

Now established himself as leader of the party. His leadership was authoritarian and he assured his political ideology. Malagong thought was at the head of the party debates over policy were only allowed in the top strain of leadership and no longer caused in party divisions. Mal had a strong reputation in the party being responsible for the policy of supporting the peasants and gorilla warfare which proved successful party. Unity was deeply ingrained in communist policies and gave leadership of the communist party in out of confidence and authority.

Mass participation was a key factor in building CCP support

A

Chinese society was mostly rural so peasant support was crucial.
Area is on the communist control so land reforms to benefit the poorest peasant and win their support when the Civil War began. The CCP returned to their more radical policy of land confiscation and at village rallies landlords and Richard peasants were announced and subject to humiliation and violence which by 1948 became so violent that CCP members began to petition Mao for restraint.

A

CCP membership included peasant farmers factory and railway workers, teachers and students
there was limited support among the middle classes who were drawn to the partydue to their record fighting Japan.
They had limited support in the cities with very few CCP initiated strikes in Shanghai

A

Posters and physical forms of propaganda were significant.
The CCP’s biggest method of propaganda that was PLA troops who had received political indoctrination as well as military training .
Each soldier became an agent in CCP areas stressing the patriotic struggle for national liberation and the promise to bring democracy and social reform to China .

Why did people lose faith in the GMD?
The GMD lost popular support as they failed to deliver on the three principles of nationalism, democracy and peoples livelihood as he had created the dictatorship and the party had not connected with the people.

Local officials abused powers taking bribes and extorting money. Taxes meant for administration and army were not collected efficiently and the tax revenue failed to reach the government meaning it was constantly in debt .

That was a fear of landlords if the narrow was recaptured by the GMD as peasants were punished for engaging in land reform. The GMD used local malicious to regain areas and landlords exactly revenge on peasants when the area was recaptured . Rent was collected at gunpoint and there were many executions .

That was serious mismanagement of the economy by the nationalist, which was a major weakness. To finance their role in the civil War the GMD printed more notes causing prices to rise and the evaluation of the currency many of the middle classes who lived on savings and fixed income suffered heavily from this . The GMD failed to deal with the situation efficiently waiting a long time for issuing the new currency . The GMD Russian food and other commodities controlling wages and prices but the resolutions were too late and by 1949 there was total collapse in some areas .

How was American aid to the GMD crucial in the Civil War?
The Americans gave nearly $3 billion of age the GMD in the course of the Civil War. This made Jiang weak as he was constantly reliant on US aid and now use this argument to prove the GMD could never lead an independent China. The GMD’s relationship with the US was under continuous strain as Jean kept requesting more aid and the US began to view him as an increasingly unreliable ally. How did Soviet assistance to the CCP affect the Civil War?
While in Manchuria, the red army provided training and equipment to the PLA. PLA officers were sent to Russia for training and in Manchuria the red army established 16 schools for military training in Air Force artillery and engineering. Any captured Japanese arms and equipment were given to the PLA and Japanese prisoners taught Chinese pilots how to fly . However, there was long-standing animosity between now and Stalin and their relationship was strained. Soviet assistance was not unconditional.

China was divided due to various ethnic cultural and religious differences and the fragmentation of the empire on various political and external interferences. In 1940 China was divided up into 10 zones with some of them being controlled by the Japanese the GMD CCP and USSR . The two most westerly provinces of Xinjiang and Tibet had not been conquered and Taiwan became a nationalist stronghold.

China’s infrastructure has been damaged by conflict. Half of the railway lines were destroyed and rivers were blocked by sunken ships. City shortage of electrical power stations were damaged and destroyed Before leaving Manchuria, the red army stripped the machinery from factories and sent it to Russia Industrial production in 1949 was 44% of its 1937 level. Agriculture suffered as many young men left to go to war and armies marched across land and took food for themselves . Food production was down 30% of its 1937 level in 1949 . Foreign trade declined and rampant inflation meant many people moved money to Hong Kong or Taiwan .
