Chapter 96- Steam Heating Equipment Flashcards
What is hydronic
Hot water
How does steam heating work
Steam gives up its latent heat within radiators and condenses back to liquid heating the room
Three types of radiators
Floor type
Window type
Wall-Hung
What is a convector
Hot water or steam flows through finned tubes that have increased heating surface that exchange heat with the air to heat a room, same as in the college dorms
In a convector what supplies air circulation
Natural convection
Difference between a convector and a unit heater
A unit heater has a fan that circulates the air
What are fin coils / reheat coils
In air heated buildings finned tubes with hot water are placed in vents so that air is heated by flowing through them
Unit ventilators are
A fin coil system that have a fresh air inlet and dampers
How does a unit ventilator work
By manipulating a damper inside the unit that either circulates fresh cool air in to the building or by recirculating air from the heated room to raise the temperature cumulatively
What does the auxiliary equipment in a steam heated building include
Air vents Radiator valves Radiator traps Condensate receiver and pump Vacuum pumps
Why is air undesired in a steam heating system
Block the flow of steam
Reduce heat transfer rates
Promotes corrosion
What are air vents for
To remove air trapped in the high points of the system
What is a radiator trap?
A thermostatic traps that expands when hot and contracts when cooler condensate fills it allowing trapped water to vent out
