Alluvial Fan
Sediment that is carried by a stream along the bottom of its channel.
Bed Load
A low triangular area where a river divides before entering a larger body of water.
Delta
The volume of water a river transports over a given amount of time.
Discharge
A ridge of land that separates two adjacent river systems.
Divide
The buildup over time of nutrients in freshwater lakes and ponds that leads to an increase in the growth of algae.
Eutrophication
Occurs when the discharge of a stream becomes so great that it exceeds the carrying capacity of its channel and overflows its banks.
Flood
An area along a river that forms from sediments deposited when the river overflows its banks.
Floodplain
A body of (usually fresh) water surrounded by land.
Lake
A curve in a stream.
Meander
A meander that has been cut off from the river.
Oxbow Lake
Water that flows over the ground surface rather than soaking into the ground.
Runoff
Ground bordering each side of a stream that keeps the moving water confined.
Stream Bank
The course the water in a stream follows.
Stream Channel
