Chapter 10 Groundwater Flashcards
A body of rock or sediment that stores groundwater and allows the flow of groundwater.
Aquifer
Impermeable beds of geologic material that hinder or prevent groundwater movement.
Aquiclude
A well in which water rises because of pressure within the aquifer.
Artesian Well
Natural underground opening connected to Earth’s surface, usually formed from groundwater dissolving limestone.
Cave
A lowering of the groundwater level caused by pumping.
Drawdown
A fountain of water and steam that builds up pressure underground and erupts at regular intervals.
Geyser
A pool formed by groundwater that has risen to the surface after being heated by a nearby body of magma.
Hot Spring
Downward movement of water through soil.
Infiltration
A type of landscape in rainy regions where there is limestone near the surface, characterized by caverns, sinkholes, and valleys.
Karst Topography
Ability of rock or soil to allow water to flow through it.
Permeability
New water that enters the aquifer from the surface.
Recharge
A circular depression formed when the roof of a cave collapses.
Sinkhole
A flow of groundwater that emerges naturally at the ground surface
Spring
A calcite deposit that hangs from the roof of a cave.
Stalactite
A cone-shaped calcite deposit that builds up from the floor of a cave.
Stalagmite
