Q

There are four main types of connective tissue. They are:

A

Fibrous (e.g., loose fibrous [areola], adipose, reticular, and dense)
Bone (e.g., compact and cancellous [spongy] bone)
Cartilage (e.g., hyaline, fibrocartilage, and elastic)
Blood

Q

Muscle Tissue

A

Muscle tissue is responsible for movement. This tissue is composed of cells that have the ability to shorten or contract. When this occurs, they cause movement of a body part. There are three types of muscle:
skeletal
smooth
cardiac

Q

skeletal muscle

A

Striated or voluntary muscle tissue; known as skeletal muscle because it attaches to bones.

Q

Cutaneous Membrane

A

The cutaneous membrane is a subdivision of the epithelial membrane. It is also known as the skin and is the primary organ of the integumentary system.
The cutaneous membrane covers the surface of the body and consists of stratified squamous epithelium and the underlying connective tissues. The outer layer of skin (epidermis) protects the body from invading microorganisms, and the underlying connective tissue layer (dermis) contains the majority of the skin appendages. The cutaneous membrane is thick, relatively waterproof, and dry.

13
Q

Serous membranes are composed of two distinct layers of tissue:

A

The parietal layer lines the walls of body cavities, much like wallpaper.
The visceral layer covers the surfaces of organs found in body cavities.

Q

Serous Membrane

A

Serous membranes are epithelial membranes that are located on surfaces of closed body cavities. They secrete a thin, watery fluid that helps reduce friction and serves as a lubricant when the organs rub against each other or the cavities that contain them.

Q

Mucous Membrane

A

Mucous membranes are epithelial membranes that line body surfaces leading to the outside. Most mucous membranes secrete mucus that keeps the membrane moist and lubricated. Examples include those membranes lining the respiratory, digestive, urinary, and reproductive systems.

Q

Connective Tissue Membrane

A

Synovial membranes belong to the category of connective tissue membranes because they contain only connective tissue and line joint cavities. Because synovial membranes do not contain any epithelium, they cannot be classified as an epithelium membranes, yet there are similarities:
Like serous membranes, synovial membranes line cavities that do not lead to the outside.
Like epithelial membranes, synovial membranes secrete a fluid to prevent friction.

Q

The membrane that lines the urinary tract is __

A

Mucous

22
Q

The skin, or cutaneous membrane, has two distinct layers:

A

The outermost thin layer of the skin is the epidermis.

The deeper thick layer of the skin is the dermis.
