Aeneid
Famous epic, written by Roman poet Virgil, and was about a Trojan hero named Aeneas
Pax Romana
A long era of peace (200 years) began with Augustus’s rule, lasted until A.D. 180, and was also called “Roman Peace”
Hadrian
One of the five good emperors, made Roman law easier to interpret and apply, helped support building projects, and built Hadrian’s Wall to keep out the Picts and Scots
Patricians
Wealthy landowners, made up ruling class, Roman citizens, had the right to vote, and pay taxes
Second Triumvirate
Octavian (Caesar’s grandnephew), Antony, Lepidus ( Octavian’s top generals) created it in 43 B.C.
Roman Confederation
Used to rule their new conquests, granted full citizenship to some people, especially Latins, and granted other people allies (free to run their own local affair, but they had to pay taxes)
Ostia
One of the largest port cities, and was at the mouth of Tiber
Third Punic War
Rome finally defeated Carthage in this war, burned Carthage down, enslaved 50,000, and Carthage then became a Roman province
Julian calendar
Julius Caesar created his calendar with 12 months, 365 days, and a leap year, used until A.D. 1582, and was later modified to the Gregoria’s Calendar
