Hong Kong
Officially the Republic of China; is a country in East Asia.
Taiwan
A large sea wave, usually caused by an earthquake with an epicenter underneath the ocean.
tsunami
A tropical storm in the western Pacific Ocean; called a cyclone or hurricane elsewhere.
typhoon
A prolific type of rice production that requires the plant roots to be submerged in water for part of the growing season.
wet rice cultivation (padi)
A failed economic reform program under Mao Zedong intended to quickly raise China’s industrial level.
Great Leap Forward
A political movement launched in 1966 to force the entire population of China to support the continuing revolution.
Cultural Revolution
The system in China where each person’s permanent residence is registered and any person who wants to migrate must obtain permission from the authorities to do so.
hukou system
An area formed when several cities expand so that their edges meet and coalesce.
conurbation
One of the most important cities in the global system in terms of economic, political, and cultural dominance.
world city
A boarder area between rival states where military activities are prohibited; usually refers to the boarder between North and South Korea.
demilitarized zone
A portable, round tent that is traditionally used by nomadic groups in Inner Asia. It is made of felt or skins that are stretched over a collapsible lattice framework.
