Rehabilitation
Care given by specialists and professionals intended to improve or restore function after illness or injury
Restorative Care
Care that is designed to maintain a resident’s functioning, to improve their quality of life, and to increase independence
List ways a lack of exercise can diminish health
- Loss of self esteem
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Boredom
- Pneumonia
- Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)
- Skin breakdown and pressure ulcers
- Constipation
- Blood Clots
- Dulling of the senses
- Muscle atrophy
- Contractures
Ambulation
Refers to moving or walking, with our without an assistive device
Ambulatory
A patient or resident that is able to get out of bed and move or walk
Cane
An ambulatory device that is used when residents can bear weight on both legs, but with a weaker side. It should be used on the strong side
Walker
An ambulatory device that is used when residents can bear some weight on both legs, but not all
Crutches
An ambulatory device that is used when residents can bear no weight on one leg. Some residents may prefer one while others may use two
Assistive Devices
Any device that is designed to help residents perform their Activities of Daily Living (ADL’s)
Amputation
The surgical removal of some or all of a body part, usually an arm, hand, leg, or foot
Phantom Sensation
The term used when a person has sensations from a body part that is no longer there
Phantom (Limb) Pain
Specifically used when a person feels pain in a limb or extremity that has been amputated
Prosthesis
A device that replaces a body part that is missing or deformed because of an accident, injury, illness, or congenital defect. These devices improve or restore function and/or appearance
Range of Motion (ROM)
Exercises that put a joint through its full range of motion. These exercises are intended to decrease or prevent contractures or atrophy, improve strength, and increase circulation
Active Range of Motion (AROM)
ROM exercises that are done by the resident themselves
