Chapter 9 Redox Common Mistakes Flashcards
(10 cards)
Electrolytic Cells Vs Galvanic Cells in energy production
Electrolytic Cells do not produce Electricity.
Galvanic Cells produce electricity only in spontaneous conditions
Electron Flow direction
Anode to Cathode
Ion flow direction
Cathode to Anode
What’s the relationship between reactivity of a metal and redox
The more reactive a metal is, the stronger is oxidation strength is. (Hence it is more likely to get oxidised)
Anode in electrolysis
Positive Charged, site of oxidation
Redox and Mass
Oxidation loses mass, redox gains mass
Electrolysis products at the cathode and the anode
Anode produces Gas (Often Chlorine gas, bromine gas)
Cathode produces liquid solid (Sodium) - NOT SODIUM ION, just liquid sodium
What occurs during the electrolysis of a molten salt
Electricity is used to cause a non spontaneous redox reaction to occur
Rules for the movement of ions in a cell
Positive ions move to the negative pole,
Negative ions move to the positive pole
Two wats in which electricity is conducted when the cell is in operation
1) Electron flows via an external circuit
2) Ions flow via a salt bridge and moves to the electrodes
