What are the three main research areas of research supporting the relationship between mental disorders and crime
Mental Disorders among criminal offenders: excluding substance and personality disorders = 15-25% inmates; depression is most widespread - might be affect not cause
Criminal Behaviour among Psychiatric Patients: former psychiatric patients have higher rates of criminality especially violent; however without substance use there’s not much difference
Mental Disorders and crime in Community Samples: (typically biased) those who have been to psychiatric hospital more likely to have criminal record
Criminalization Hypothesis
Police are more likely to arrest an individual with a mental disorder; could be because of deinstitutionalization, police discretion, or the ease of catching individuals with mental disorders
Summaries Vincent Li case

What factors can contribute to the relationship between mental disorders and crime
Co-morbidity (stacking mental disorders); a mental disorder with substance use; their social status (poverty and other social disadvantage contribute to crime; contributes to mental disorders); victimization (those with mental disorders are more likely to be victims in a crime; they might be modelling or have more fear contributing to crime)
