CHAPTER 9: Measure of skewness and kurtosis Flashcards
It can be divided into two identical halves, each a mirror image of the other.
Symmetric distribution
It is not symmetric.
Skewed distribution
The concentration of values is at the left, and the upper tail stretches out more than the lower tail.
Positively skewed distribution (skewed to the right)
The concentration of values is at the right, and the lower tail stretches out more than the upper tail.
Negatively skewed distribution (skewed to the left)
The tails of the distribution are equally distributed, and Sk=0.
Symmetric distribution
It has a higher concentration of values around the mean, thicker tails, and a sharper peak than normal.
Leptokurtic distribution
It has a lower concentration of values around the mean, thinner tails, and a flatter peak than normal.
Platykurtic distribution
The measure of the “peakedness” or “flatness” of a distribution compared to a normal curve.
Kurtosis
A measure of asymmetry in a distribution.
Skewness
A bell-shaped curve symmetric about its mean, with total area equal to 1.
Normal distribution
Sk>0 indicates this type of skewness.
Positive skewness
The hump is the same as the normal curve with the same variance.
Mesokurtic distribution
