Iliacus O&I
origin: inner surface of the ilium
insertion: lesser trochanter of the femur and shaft just below
Iliacus Action
flexion of hip, anterior pelvic tilt, external rotation of hip, transverse pelvic rotation contra laterally when ipsilateral fetus is stabilized
Iliacus Innervation
lumbar nerve and femoral nerve (L2-L4)
Psoas Major and Minor O&I
Origin: lower borders of the transverse processes (L1-L5), sides of the bodies of the last thoracic vertebra (T12), the lumbar vertebrae (L1-L5), intervertebral fibrocartilages, and base of the sacrum
Insertion: lesser trochanter of the femur and shaft just below posts minor; pectineal line (of pubis) and iliopectineal eminence
Psoas Major and Minor Action
flexion of hip, anterior pelvic rotation, flexion of lumbar spine, external rotation of the hip, transverse pelvic rotation contra laterally when ipsilateral femur is stabilized, lateral flexion of lumbar spine, lateral pelvic rotation to contralateral side
(psoas minor is involved only in lumbar spine movements)
Psoas Major and Minor Innervation
lumbar nerve and femoral nerve (L2-L4)
Rectus Femoris O&I
Origin: anterior inferior iliac spine of the ilium and groove (posterior) above the acetabulum
Insertion: superior aspect of the patella and patella tendon to the tibial tuberosity
Rectus Femoris Action
flexion of hip, extension of knee, anterior pelvic rotation
Rectus Femoris Innervation
femoral nerve (L2-L4)
Sartorius O&I
Origin: anterior superior iliac spine and notch just below the spine
Insertion: anterior medial surface of the tibia just below the condyle
Sartorius Action
flexion of the hip, flexion of the knee, anterior pelvic rotation, external rotation of the thigh as it flexes the hip and knee, weak internal rotation of the knee, abduction of the hip
Sartorius Innervation
femoral nerve (L2,L3)
Pectineus O&I
Origin: space 1 inch wide on the front of the pubis just above the crest
Insertion: rough line leading from the lesser trochanter down to the line aspera
Pectineus Action
flexion of hip, adduction of hip, external rotation
Pectineus Innervation
femoral nerve (L2-L4)
Adductor Brevis O&I
Origin: front of the inferior pubic rams just below the origin of the adductor longus
Insertion: lower 2/3 of the pectineal line of the femur and the upper hand of the medial lip of the line aspera
Adductor Brevis Action
adduction of hip, external rotation as it adducts hip, assist in flexion of hip
Adductor Brevis Innervation
obturator nerve (L3-L4)
Adductor Longus O&I
Origin: anterior pubis just below its crest
Insertion: middle 1/3 of the line aspera
Adductor Longus Action
adduction of the hip, assists in flexion of hip
Adductor Longus Innervation

Adductor Magnus O&I
Origin: edge of the entire pubic rams and the ischium and ischial tuberosity
Insertion: whole length of the line aspera, inner condyloid ridge, and adductor tubercle
Adductor Magnus Action
adduction of hip, external rotation as the hip adducts, extension of the hip
Adductor Magnus Innervation
anterior: obturator nerve (L2-L4)
posterior: sciatic nerve (L4, L5, S1-S3)
Gracilis O&I
Origin: anteromedial edge of the descending rams of the pubis
Insertion: anterior medial surface of the tibia below the condyle
Gracilis Action
adduction of hip, weak flexion of the knee, assists with flexion of hip, internal rotation of hip, weak internal rotation of knee
Gracilis Innervation
obturator nerve (L2-L4)
Semitendinosus O&I
Origin: ischial tuberosity
Insertion: upper anterior medial surface of the tibia just below the condyle
Semitendinosus Action
flexion of the knee, extension of the hip, posterior pelvic rotation, internal rotation of hip, internal rotation of the flexed knee
Semitendinosus Innervation
sciatic nerve–tibial division (L5, S1, S2)
Semimembranosus O&I
Origin: Ischial tuberosity
Insertion: Posteromedial surface of the medial tibial condyle
Semimembranosus Action
flexion of knee, extension of hip, posterior pelvic rotation, internal rotation of hip, internal rotation of knee
Semimembranosus Innervation
sciatic nerve–tibial division (L5, S1, S2)
Biceps Femoris O&I
Origin: long head: ischial tuberosity
short head: lower half of the line aspera and lateral condyloid ridge
Insertion: head of fibula and lateral condyle of tibia
Biceps Femoris Action
flexion of knee, extension of hip, posterior pelvic rotation, external rotation of hip, external rotation of knee
Biceps Femoris Innervation
Long head: sciatic nerve–tibial division (S1-S3)
Short head: sciatic nerve–peroneal division (L5, S1, S2)
Gluteus Maximus O&I
Origin: posterior 1/4 of the crest of the ilium, posterior surface of the sacrum and coccyx near the ilium, and fascia of the lumbar area
Insertion: oblique ridge on the lateral surface of the greater trochanter and the iliotibial band of the fasciae latae
Gluteus Maximus Action
extension of hip, posterior pelvic rotation, external rotation of hip, upper fibers: assist in hip abduction
Gluteus Maximus Innervation
inferior gluteal nerve (L5, S1, S2)
Gluteus Medius O&I
Origin: lateral surface of the ilium just below the crest
Insertion: posterior and middle surfaces of the greater trochanter of the femur
Gluteus Medius Action
abduction of hip, lateral pelvic rotation to ipsilateral side,
anterior fibers: internal rotation of hip, flexion of hip, anterior pelvic rotation
posterior fibers: external rotation of hip, extension of hip, posterior pelvic rotation
Gluteus Medius Innervation
superior gluteal nerve (L4, L5, S1)
Gluteus Minimus O&I
Origin: lateral surface of the ilium just below the origin of the gluteus medius
insertion: anterior surface of the greater trochanter of the femur
Gluteus Minimus Action
abduction of hip, lateral pelvic rotation to ipsilateral side, hip internal rotation as femur is abducted, flexion of hip, anterior pelvic rotation
Gluteus Minimus Innervation
superior gluteal nerve (L4, L5, S1)
Tensor Fasciae Latae O&I
Origin: anterior iliac crest and surface of the ilium just below the crest
Insertion one-fourth of the way down the thigh into the iliotibial tract, which in turn inserts onto Gerdy’s tubercle of the anterolateral tibial condyle
Tensor Fasciae Latae Action
abduction of hip, lateral pelvic rotation to ipsilateral side, flexion of hip, anterior pelvic rotation, internal rotation of hip as it flexes
Tensor Fasciae Latae Innervation
