Chapter 9 - Corrosion | Forms of corrosion Flashcards
What are the three groups of metal corrosion?
– wet corrosion
– dry corrosion
– corrosion in other fluids such as fused salts and molten metals
What forms of wet corrosion are there?
- Galvanic corrosion
- Crevice corrosion
- Pitting corrosion
- Intergranular corrosion
- Stress corrosion cracking
What is Galvanic corrosion?
This is the corrosion of a more active metal when connected to a more noble metal from the galvanic series
What is Crevice corrosion?
This results from a difference in dissolved O2 between the area inside the crevice and the area outside the crevice.
What is Pitting corrosion?
preferential attack that occurs at breaks
in the natural oxide layer on passive metals
What is intergranular corrosion?
when grain boundaries are
more susceptible to corrosion compared to the bulk grain
What is stress corrosion cracking?
accelerated corrosion, localized
at cracks in tensile loaded components
