Chapter 9: Conducting experiments Flashcards
What are some ways to measure the Dependent Variable?
- Self-Report Measure
- Behavioral Measure- direct observation of participants
- Physiological Measure- EEG, EMG, etc.
What is the ceiling/floor effect?
Failure of a measure to detect a difference because it was too easy/difficult
What are demand characteristics?
Any feature of an experiment that might inform participants of the purpose of the study, results in participant expectations
2 kinds of participant expectations?
Demand characteristics and the placebo effect
What are some ways you can physiologically measure dependent variables?
- EEG- electrical activity of brain cells
- GSR- electrical conductance of the skin
- EMG-muscle tension
- MRI-brain structure
- Heart rate
- Temperature
- Blood analysis
What is a manipulation check
An attempt to directly measure whether the IV has the intendended effect on participants
Why are strong manipulations important?
they maximize the difference between conditions
