Chapter 13: Understanding research results: statisitical inference Flashcards
What is the Null Hypothesis?
Hypothesis that if you were to have 2 conditions, performance would be the same/nothing would happen
researchers want to reject this hypothesis because they are searching for differences
What is the Research/Alternative hypothesis?
Counters the null, says something will happen/treatment will have an effect
researchers want to fail to reject this hypothesis
What are the 2 most common inferential tests?
t and F tests
When is a t test used?
Used to examine whether 2 groups are significantly different from each other
what does it mean if your t falls into the region of rejection?
- reject the null hypothesis
- your results are significant
A t value of what is significant?
2+
When is an F test used? What is it?
when there is 3+ conditions or if its a factorial design with more than one IV
ANOVA/analysis of variance
T/F the F test can only be negative
false, it can only be positive
what does it mean if your t falls outside the region of rejection?
- fail to reject the null hypothesis
- your results are not significant
