what is organizational culture?
ways of thinking, acting and understanding work that are shared by members of an organization that reflects an organizations distinct identity
ex: at ecu we have a mission, serving eastern nc to towards regional success, research, and student success
tall organization
multiple layers, high hierarchal
ex: it’s hard to directly reach out the chancellor, their is a chain in demand in order to reach out to him
flat organization
communication is more open, you would be able to directly contact boss
what are the vocabularies in organizations (2)
- hierarchical language: distinguish levels of status among members (MR, MS, DR, professor, MA’AM)
- Masculine Language: related to men’s interests and experiences (ballpark estimate, plan of attack, stick to it, under fire)
what are the types of stories used in organizational culture
- corporate stories (have values, style, history of org)
- personal stories (accounts that announce how people regard themselves and how they want to be seen by others)
- collegial stories (told by coworkers tell us what to expect from whom, like the truth could be really good or not)
Rites
are dramatic planned set of activites that bring together aspects of an organizations culture in a single event (having a retirement lunch or dinner acknowledging the retiring employee’s contributions )
rituals
forms of communication that occur regularly and that members of an organization perceive as familiar and routine parts of organizational life (can be personal, social and task rituals)
what are roles
are responsibilities and behaviors that are expected of people because of their specific positions in an organization
what are rules
patterned ways of interacting
policies
formal statements of practices that reflect and uphold the overall culture of an organization
