Chapter 9 Adrenal Glands Flashcards
Who discovered what stress does to the body?
Han Selye
What are the three stages to stress adaptation?
Alarm stage, Resistance stage, and Exhaustion stage
What does the Zona Glomerulosa (cortex) do?
Produces hormones
What hormone does the Zona Glomerulosa produce?
Aldosterone
What does aldosterone do?
It’s responsible for long term blood pressure.
What is Aldosterone?
A mineralocorticoid
What is the function of the Zona Glomerulosa?
Renal reabsorption of sodium and excretion of hydrogen and potassium ions
Where are glucocorticoids produced?
Zona Fasciculate
What is the primary function of glucocorticoids?
Metabolism of glucose
Cortisol and Corticosterone are examples of what?
glucocorticoids
What two hormones are produced in the Zona Reticularis?
Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)
What does Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) do?
Regulates adrenal androgen
What hormones are secreted in the inner medulla of the adrenal gland?
epinephrine (epinephrine) and noepinephrine (noradrenaline)
Epinephrine and no epinephrine are what?
Catecholamines
What is the site of synthesis for no epinephrine and epinephrine?
adrenal medulla
What does noepinephrine do?
It affects post sympathetic ganglions - neurons affecting the heart- causing constriction of blood vessels when pressure drops
What does epinephrine do?
increases blood pressure, dilates vessels in the skeletal muscles and liver.
What is epinephrine?
a neurotransmitter
Hyposecretion of the adrenal gland is known as?
Addison’s Disease
Hypersecretion of the adrenal gland is known as?
Cushing’s Syndrome
In Addison’s Disease the adrenals produce too little:
Cortisol, aldosterone, and causes adrenal insufficiency
Muscle weakness, fatigue, weight loss, decreased appetite, salt craving, muscle or joint pain, body hair loss, sexual dysfunction and hyperpigmentation (darkening areas of skin) are signs and symptoms of what?
Addison’s Disease
What do androgens do?
Libido and a sense of well being in men and women
What occurs in Primary Adrenal Insufficiency?
The adrenal cortex is damaged
