Significance: Followed original teachings of Buddha, release from wheel of life by strict adherence to personal behavior, and quest for understanding.
Tamerlane
Who/What: ruler of mongol khanate (like a state?)
Where: based in samarkand (north of pamir mountains)
When: 14th century
Significance: founded kingdom on ruins of mongol empire, immediately launched program of conquest once he had power, conquered caspian sea area,
