Byzantine Empire
Who/What: The powerful empire that came from the fall of the Eastern Roman Empire
Where: East Rome, with territory changing over time around the mediterranean and asia minor.
When: early 6th cent.
Significance: built on faith in Jesus, and lots of aristocratic talents went toward building and decorating churches. (more I should say?)
Ottoman Turks
Who/What: Muslims. MORE FROM ANNIE?
Where: NE Aia Minor
When: 13th century
Significance: Spread rapidly in 13th century and seized lands of Seljuk Turks and the Byzantine Empire. Attacked and conquered constantinople.
Macedonian Dynasty
Who/What: New dynasty of Byzantine emperors
Where: Byzantine Empire
When: 9th and 10th centuries
Significance: Byzantine emperors encouraged economic development, by expanding trade relations with Western Europe, by selling silks and metal work. Attempted to help protect free farmers from being bought out by wealthy aristocrats, but most lost their land anyway. Basil II was a talented military leader, and was able to defeat the Bulgers, add Crete and Cyprus ilands th the empire, and defeat Muslim forces in Syria. THis made the Byzantine empire the largest it had been since the 7th century.
Empress Theodora
Who/What: empress of the Byzantine empire
Where: Constantinople
When: 6th century
Significance: She was not only a woman who achieved the status of Empress, but a former actress. Women did not often gain such power, especially when they were of lower social class as she was as an actress.
The Varangian Guard
Who/What: group of vikings who acted as bodyguards to byzantine emperor
Where: byzantine empire (constantinople w/ emperor)
When: start of 10th cent
Significance: Chosen for their terrifying nature of being large people with light hair, skin and eyes compared to the Byzantines.
