Significance: major carriers of goods between the Persian Gulf and Mediterranean Sea (ENOUGH?)
Seljuk Turks
Who/What: Turkish speaking people from Xiongnu Empire
Where: Originated from Xiongnu Empire, after its fall migrated and were able to reach Abbasid empire.
When: Took over Abbasid Empire in 11th Century
Significance: occupied Eastern provinces of Abbasid Empire, (add more!!)
Abbasids
Who/What: female heads of monastery for nuns. Abas was the founder.
Where: Pursia
When: Late 8th, early 9th centuries
Significance: Made learning a priority, defenders of muslim faith
Sufism
Who/What: Islamic, connect with Allah directly through ‘ecstatic love,’ dancing and music to connect with God. (Islamic Poet Rumi came up with this)
Where: Middle East , Baghdad
When: 9th century
Significance: abandones orthodox Islamic mentality, allowing a mystical relationship with God and humans. Alternative to islam, focused more on mystical love and acceptance
