Chapter 9 Flashcards
Allosterism
A change in the activity & conformation of an enzyme resulting from the binding of a compound at a site on the enzyme other than the active binding site.
Allosteric Sites
The place on an enzyme where a molecule that is not a substrate may bind, thus changing the shape of the enzyme & influencing its ability to be active.
Negative Allosterism
Occurs when the binding of one ligand decreases the affinity for substrate of other active sites.
Feedback Regulation
Control mechanism that uses the consequences of a process to regulate the rate at which the process occurs.
Secondary Messengers
Molecules that relay signals received at receptors on the cell surface.
Covalent Modification
Enzymes can be regulated by transfer of a molecule or atom from a donor to an amino acid side chain that serves as the acceptor of the transferred molecule.
Proenzymes
An inactive enzyme precursor.
Also called a Zymogen
