Chapter 9 Flashcards
well encapsulated, well differentiated, do not spread, are not invasive, low mitotic index
benign tumor
tumors have no capsule, which allows them to spread. (metastasize) grows rapidly, poorly differentiated (may not determine tissue of origin)
malignant tumor
Sarcoma
cancer of the connective tissue, arise in bone , muscle, fat. cartilage
carcinoma
cancer of epithelial tissue, originate in skin, lungs, breasts, pancreas
leukemia
cancer of blood-forming cells
lymphoma
cancer of lymphatic tissue
adenoma
benign tumor of epithelial tissue with glandular origin, adrenal glands, pituitary gland, thyroid, prostate
basal cell carcinoma
SKIN CANCER commonly occurs on the head, neck or SUN EXPOSED AREAS with fair complexion
human-herpes virus. has been linked with development of cancer
Epstein Barr Virus
poorly differentiated within a group of cell
anaplasia
anaplastic cells of varying size , and shape
PLEOMORPHIC
Intracranial tumor, originate from brain parenchyma
Meningioma
group of abnormal cells, “pre cancer”. No potential metastasis unless progress to cancer
cancer in situ
angiogenic factors
new blood vessels form from pre existing vessels. transition of tumors from benign to malignant.
tobacco smoking
responsible for small cell and squamous cell carcinoma of the lungs. Cause to damage blood vessels and number of diseases. 4-5 million deaths a year world wide and 30% of cancer death
