System where only two political parties dominate elections

Electoral district (Geographical Area of Political Landscape) is represented by one representative
New Deal Coalition
Diverse group of voters/interest groups that came together in support of Democratic Party during presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt
Divided Government
One party controls executive branch/presidency while other party controls one or both houses of Congress
Gridlock
When legislative process is stalled due to inability of lawmakers to reach agreement on policy decisions
Dealignment
When voters become increasingly disconnected from traditional political parties
Realignment
Significant and lasting shift in the political arena
National Chairperson
Acts as head of party’s permanent organization/helps party’s presidential nominee win election
Soft Money
Political contributions ($) made to political parties for purposes other than supporting specific candidate
Straight Ticket
When voter selects candidates from same political party for all offices on ballot
