Participants must be registered as members of one party and may vote for the candidates from only the party to which they belong.
Closed primary
A preliminary election held to select candidates and/or delegates to party conventions
Direct primary
A primary in which voters do not have to declare their party membership
Open primary
Voters received identical bal- lots that included the names of all the candidates.
Blanket primary
Campaign money raised for a specific candidate in federal elections and spent according to federal laws and restrictions
Hard money
Campaign money raised apart from federal regulations and given to local, state, and national party organizations to be used for “party building” activities such as voter registration efforts and get-out-the-vote drives.
Soft money
Individuals appointed by political parties and candidates to observe the polls on election day.
Poll watchers
A location in a specific precinct where residents of that area go to vote.
Polling place
Residents of a district represented by an elected official.
Constituents
People who are generally spared from all the preliminary rigors because they have many advantages—powers of their office, name recognition, financial backing, and the services of their constituents
