What are major parties?
Republican and democratic parties
These parties are organized to gain powers by winning elections.
Political parties
These parties are smaller parties that are usually organized around a particular issue.
Minor parties
What are third parties?
Same as minor parties
There are only two major parties with which most of the electorate identifies.
Two-party system
In this party it is common among European democratics. Also several parties compete for majority support.
Multi-party system
A formal statement of a party’s position on current issues
Party platform
A temporary alliance of several groups, to gain a majority and thereby gain control of the government.
Coalition
A small meeting of a party’s top leaders and legislators in Congress.
Caucus
Voters who have no party affiliation, in the past forty years.
Independent voters
Voting for candidates of both parties for different offices
Ticket splitting
A spirit of two-party cooperation, to shape laws that make it difficult for a third-party candidate to be put on the ballot.
Bipartisan
A strong devotion to a political party.
