Chapter 9 Flashcards
What is the CNS divided into?
Gray and white matter
What is white matter
Myelinated axons, very few cell bodies. Bundles of axons connecting CNS regions are called tracts
What is grey matter
Interneurons, unmyelinated nerve cell bodies, dendrites, axons and terminals
How do nerves leave the spinal cord?
Notches between stacked vertebrae
What is a Meniges?
Three layers of membranes that cover and protect your brain and spinal cord. Dura, arachnoid, and pia
What does the brain float in?
Cerebrospinal Fluid, produced in the choroid plexus, then secreted into ventricles
What does CSF provide?
Physical and chemical protection, padding, regulates, and waste management
What is the BBB
Blood brain barrier protects brain from toxic compounds and pathogens. In-between blood and interstitial fluid. Oxygen passes through and glucose moves across
What is the four regions of the spinal cord?
Cranial, thoracic, lumbar, sacral, all of which goes to segment, then bilateral pairs, then nerves branch to two roots
What do dorsal roots do?
Bring sensory info to the spinal cord
What do dorsal root ganglia do?
Contain afferent nuclei
What are the four parts of the brain?
Frontal, parietal, occipital, and temporal
What does the brain stem contain?
Numerous discrete groups of nerve cell bodies (nuclei) that play a role in controlling a wide range of basic processes
What does Diencephalon mean?
Between the brain stem and cerebrum
What information does the cerebellum receive?
Movement, Eq, balance, motor commands from cerebrum, motor tasks and correcting movement errors
