Q

Examples of Screenings

A

-Ultrasound
-Doppler flow studies
-Alpha-fetoprotein analysis (AFP): 16-18 wks; open neural defects; protein leaked into the amniotic fluid
-Marker Screening Tests: in 2nd trimester (16-18 wks); predics chromosomal abnormalities & neural def.

Q

Prenatal Diagnostic Tests

A

*Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS): 10- 12 wks; invasive- the back of the placenta
*Amniocentesis: after 20 wks- chromosomal abnormalities (1-2 wks for results)
*Biophysical profile: BPP- type of ultrasound

Q

BPP (Biophysical Profile)

A

assessment of specific fetal behavioral and physiologic characteristics. These include FETAL MOVEMENT, FETAL TONE, FETAL BREATHING movement, and amniotic fluid amount/ assessment; FHR
objective: reduce stillbirths and detect hypoxia early enough to avoid perm. fetal damage

Q

BPP (Biophysical Profile) Scoring and Interpretation

A

-each parameter met is a 2, not a zero. Total 10 pts possible. 8-10 normal if amniotic fluid is adequate, 6 or less suspicious and further investigation is nec. 30 min are allotted for testing
