Chapter 8 - Wireless, Mobile, Communicating, and Mobile Commerce Flashcards
Provide some examples of wireless technologies
Wireless Devices (ex. smartphones)
Wireless Transmission Media (ex. microwave, satellite, radio)
What is dematerialization?
The functions of many physical devices are included in one other device (ex. a smartphone can call, text, take picture, etc)
What are the key factors of microwaves?
High volume, long distance, line-of-sight (transmitter and receiver are in view of each other) communication
What are the 3 types of satellites and explain their functions
GEO - Geostationary Earth Orbit: Few satellites needed for global coverage, most expensive
MEO - Medium Earth Orbit: Move relative to point on earth, less expensive then GEO
LEO - Low Earth Orbit: Large number needed for global coverage, least expensive
What is GPS?
Global Positioning Systems: A wireless system that utilizes satellites to enable users to determine their position anywhere on earth
- Uses MEO satellites
What is IoS?
Internet over Satellite: A way to access internet without a cable
- Uses GEO satellites
- ex. Starlink
What is Radio?
Radio: Uses radio wave frequencies to send data
- Used to connect computers to LANS (ex. wifi and cellular)
What is a Rogue Access Point?
Unauthorized access point into a wireless network
What is an Evil Twin Attack?
Attacker simulates a wireless access point with the same wireless network name
Define Short-Range Wireless Networks and provide an example
Have a range of 30 m or less
- Bluetooth: Creates a small personal area network
- Near-field communications: Has the smallest range of any network and is found in cellphones and credit cards
Define Medium-Range Wireless Networks and provide an example
Wireless local area networks (WLAN)
- WIFI: Devices can connect to each other without antennas
- MIFI: A small, portable device that provides users with WIFI
- LIFI: Uses light to transmit data
Define Wide-Area Wireless Networks and provide an example
Connect users to the internet over a large geographical space
- Cell phones: provide two way communications over a cellular network
- WiMAX: telecommunications technology for broadband internet access
What is IoT?
Internet of Things: A system in which any object has a unique identity and is able to send and receive information over a network
