What are the functions of Enterprise Resource Planning Systems?
ERP - Provide communication between functional area IS’s through an integrated database
What are the functions of Transaction Processing Systems?
TPS - Support the monitoring, collection, storage, and processing of data from the organizations day-to-day operations
What is Batch Processing?
The firm collects data from transactions as they occur, placing them in batches. The systems then processes the batches periodically.
What is OLTP?
Online Transaction Processing: Business transactions are processed online as soon as they occur
What is OLAP?
Online Analytical Processing: The analysis of accumulated data by end-users
What is Material Requirements Planning?
MRP - Dealing only with production scheduling and inventories
What is Manufacturing Resource Planning?
MRP II - Integrating a firm’s production, inventory management, purchasing, financing, and labour activities
What are Ad Hoc reports?
Nonroutine reports that often include special information that is not include in routine reports
Explain the difference between ERP and ERP II
ERP: Systems were originally deployed to facilitate manufacturing. Did not expand to other functional areas, such as sales and marketing
ERP II: Web-enabled link among key business systems . Includes facets of the value chain
What are some limitations of ERP?
- Employees may not want to change familiar processes
- Systems can be complex, expensive, and time consuming
- High failure rate 50 - 75%
What are three approaches for ERP implementation?
Vanilla approach: A company implements a standard ERP package, using the built in configuration options
Custom approach: Implementing a more customized ERP by developing function specifically for that organization
Best-Of- Breed approach: Mix and match ERP modules to fit their unique processes
What is SaaS?
Companies can acquire ERP systems without having to buy a complete software solution
