Chapter 8 The planning process Flashcards
Name some important reasons for a good planning of a construction project.
- To set realistic time framework for a project
- To establish realistic standards and avoid ”wishful thinking”
- To give a basis for control during the project
- To monitor preformance in term of output, time and money
- To review progress and take action whem nesscary
2.We talk about different planning programmes at different stages of a project. Name, for the
following stages, some important programmes and mention who is preparing (responsible for) the programme in question:
a. Design-stage: projectmaster schedule prepared by: client
b. Tender-stage: pretender programme; contractor
c. Contract-stage: Master programme, target programme, sub-contractors programme, procurement programme, all these are prepared by the contractor and the sub-contractor. The stage programme, short-term programme and as-built programme are prepared by the contractor
Who is preparing (responsible for) a project master programme? Describe briefly the content of such a programme.
It is prepared by the client (agent, represantivies or project manager. And it contents: Key dates: start and completion, design, tender and construction dates it shows overall programming and phasing and handover dates.
4.What is a pre-tender programme? Who is usually preparing it? Give some important reasons for a pre-tender planning!
- The contractor is preparing it
- To identify keydates or gateways at critical stages of the project.
- To establish a realistic projectmaster schedule on which to base the appointment of consultants, contractors, etc.
- To give a basis controll of the project to makeit possible for the client to monitor actual progress and if necessary take corrective actions
- To establish a realistic time period for the construction stage
- What is a pre-contract planning? Give an example as regards a pre-contract programme! Give some important reasons for a pre-contract planning!
It is prepared by the contractor: ”the contracters planning considerations during the preparation of an estimate” reasons:
• To aid the tendering process in general
• To establish a realistic contract period on which the tender may be based
• To identify construction methods
• To assess method-related itemswhich affect the bid price.
• To aid the buil-up contract preliminaries and plant expenditure
What do we mean by contract planning?
It is the more detailed planningand it will be further developed during the construction stage. It’s made by main contractor
- The contract planning can be done in different levels. Mention three such levels!

8.Name five important general guide-lines as regards planning of a project!
- Getting a feel for the project
- Establishing key project dates
- Establishing key activities or events
- Assessing how long the activities will take
- Esablishing the sequence
- Deciding which programming technique to use (for time-planning, analysis, and presentation)
- Name the seven steps in the “Seven steps systematics”
- Clarify the task
- Present alternatives
- Collect data
- Prepare programmes and detailed plans
- Achieve necessary approvals
- Execute the construction according to the programmes and plans
- Follow up
- Describe the content in step 1 of the “Seven steps systematics”
The aim with step 1 is to become acquainted with the project
- study documents, drawings, specifications
- interview the client and the clients representive
- study the constructions site
- Describe the content in step 3 of the “Seven steps systematics”
the aim with step 3 is to achieve necessary data regarding production operations, methods, resources
• Study ”the company archive”, handbooks, other relavant literature
• Make interviews
• Make study-visits
• In some cases make trial operations
- Describe the content in step 7 of the “Seven steps systematics”
”follow up”
Aim: to make sure that the plans/programmes are followed and to collect data for the future
• Follow up of cost-data, time-data, and quality-data
• Work measurement on activities of special intresst
• Analysis of new methods, materials, and machines
• Analysis of parts of the production where estimations
- What do we mean by “work breakdown structure”? When is it especially important?
Itis when you divied the project to smaller packagest hat can be estimated, planed, assigned and controlled. It is especially important in big projects
What is a lead-time?
Time needed to purchas/order, design, produce and, deliver a product. Lead-times will affect the planning of a construction project.
