What lead the north to be more powerful in Congress?
They were wealthier than the south and had a bigger population
Before the Compromise of 1850, what did each side believe of the other?
The north became completely intolerant of slavery, while the south thought it was morally wrong to abolish slavery
What were the terms of the Missouri Compromise?
Before this, it was half-and half, so Missouri was the tiebreaker
Maine became a free state
Missouri became a slave state
The 36-30 line was where slavery couldn’t go north of.
Who was Dred Scott opposed to?
Sanford (his owner)
What was the reason for this case?
Scott filed law suit against his slave owner because he claimed that he and his wife lived in territories that were free, so they couldn’t be slaves, but still had to be slaves anyway because they were originally.
What was the ruling of the case?
It was 7-2 in favor of Sanford. Scott wasn’t considered a citizen, so he couldn’t sue anyone anyway if he won.
What got enforced after the case?
A slave was property and couldn’t be free even if they were on free soil.
What gave people the right to enforce this law about slaves being property?
Property was protected by the 5th Amendment in the Constitution.
What made the Constitution and Declaration of Independence unique?
The documents weren’t intended to apply blacks to it’s laws.
